Naturally occurring gas is an immensely valuable resource – indeed, its presence in the North Sea transformed the UK’s economy in the 1970s. It is present at all of our onshore wells, sitting above oil deposits in the permeable geological formations that characterise oil fields.
Extracted using well-tried recovery techniques, the purified gas has a wide variety of applications. Its chief application for Star Energy is currently as a fuel for power generation.
We have committed major investment at the Humbly Grove site, installing three 5 MW Siemens Typhoon gas-turbine power generators. A collateral benefit – one that typifies the synergy of integrated working – is that the drawing-off of gas enhances oil production by allowing the level of oil to rise within the rock formations.
Our Albury gas field has two 1 MW generators, making a total embedded production capacity of circa 17 MW in the Weald Basin.
At Welton associated gas is converted into electricity via a 1 MW gas engine power generator. At Gainsborough gas production is used to power 9 MW of installed gas engine power generation and excess power is sold via the grid. In addition, gas is sold at Gainsborough to two customers via a Star Energy-owned gas supply system.
Star Energy has significant gas reserves at our Bletchingley and Albury fields in the Weald Basin.
